Is there another city other than San Francisco that has the greatest collection of homegrown individual sports icons like the Bay Area?

.

By all means we are not referring to sub par athletes, we’re only referencing superstar players who are widely considered top 3 in their respective sports.

.

The long list of sports icons that has shared and contributed to the San Francisco area all have been polarizing, unique, unbreakable, and dominant. At the very top of this list is an honorable man that is highly known for being the best wide-receiver ever to play in the National Football League. This individual played 15 years with the San Francisco 49ers and holds the #1 record for most receiving yards in an NFL career. This man is none other than Jerry Rice. Jerry Rice was blessed with sheer speed, durability, and the gift of opportunity to play with two Hall of Fame quarterbacks such as, Joe Montana, and Steve Young.

.

Between the 3 superb athletes they were able to collectively bring the city of San Francisco 5 Super Bowl championships. At the time when the universe revolved around Joe Montana and Candlestick Park, there was another sports phenomenon that was stealing bases across the river at Oakland Coliseum.

.

Still to this day no one has been able to close on breaking the record of Ricky Henderson for the most stolen bases in a single baseball season, or baseball career. Ricky ended up playing a total of 14 seasons with the Oakland Athletics, and in most people’s eyes is considered the greatest baseball player ever to suit up in the yellow and green uniform.

The art of stealing bases is one talent, but the power to hit home runs out of the park on a nightly basis takes an extraordinary amount of physical strength and eye-to-bat coordination. Has there ever been a slugger like quite like Barry Bonds Jr? In 2001 Barry Bonds surpassed Marc McGuire for the most home runs in a single season finishing with a whopping 73. Barry also holds the records for the most home runs in a career totaling 762. Although Bonds has won 7 MVP Awards, he has yet to be inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1985 the Golden State Warriors drafted Chris Mullen, and then 4 years later drafted point guard Tim Hardway. At that particular time Warrior fans may have thought that they had the greatest duo in franchise history, but they had no clue who and what would fall in their laps 24 years later. Steph Curry was drafted number #7 in 2009, and would later gain the nickname “baby face assassin” due to his ability to shoot dagger three pointers at significant moments throughout a particular game and at the same time have a boyish grin all over his face. Curry undoubtedly changed the way basketball is played today. The days of mid range jumpers and a post game are completely over. Pulling up to the half court line and launching a 40 foot jumper is not considered a bad shot if you’re Steph Curry. In 2021 Curry would go on to pass Ray Allen for the most career 3 point shots made in single career. This individual accolade would eventually produce a total of 4 NBA Championships and further stamp the Golden State Warriors legacy as one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.

.

.

Once again we must pose this question that is left to be unanswered. Is there a city other than San Francisco that has a collection of far more superior sports icons? From José Conseco, Ricky Henderson, Barry Bonds, Stephy Curry, Klay Thompson, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, and Joe Montana, not to mention the future superstars down the pipeline awaiting their turn to add their names to the list of sports excellence. Outside of Barry Bonds all of these incredible and unique athletes we’re originally drafted by teams in the Bay Area. To answer the lingering question, there is no other city that comes close to the city of San Francisco which has been able to draft rare talent and at the same time deliver countless championships.
